2 Celebrating a Remarkable Journey: Kaushiki’s Successful Bilateral Cataract Surgery
At Chirag Eye Care, we are dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for our patients. Today, we are thrilled to share the inspiring story of 19-year-old Kaushiki from Ghazipur, UP. Kaushiki, a special needs child diagnosed with Down’s syndrome, came to us accompanied by her concerned mother, seeking help for her declining vision.
Kaushiki’s vision was severely affected, with a visual acuity of counting fingers close to her face in both eyes. Upon examination, we discovered that she had developmental cataracts in both eyes. While cataract surgery is a routine procedure, operating on a young girl with special needs, who faced difficulties cooperating during evaluations, presented a unique challenge.
With meticulous planning and involving her family in every step, we embarked on a journey to restore Kaushiki’s vision. We decided that she would undergo the surgery under IV sedation, and we enlisted the expertise of Dr. Yadav, our senior anesthetist, for her care. The IOL power calculation was performed during the procedure itself, ensuring accurate results. To minimize the need for repeated general anesthesia, we chose to perform bilateral cataract surgeries in the same sitting.
On a Sunday, the day of the surgery, everything fell into place by the grace of the divine. Both eyes underwent successful Phacoemulsification with foldable IOL surgery. We meticulously maintained separate instrument trays for each eye and changed the irrigation solution after each eye, ensuring utmost care and precision.
Kaushiki’s recovery has been remarkable, and today she visited us for her one-week follow-up. While her visual acuity is 6/24 in both eyes (with suspected deep-seated amblyopia and a healthy fundus), the most significant achievement is witnessing her ability to walk unaided and recognize people. But above all, the greatest joy for our team is seeing her radiant smile.
